Color Crush: Necessary Neutrals…

It’s definitely a “between the seasons” moment right now. The southern heat makes fall seem like a distant fantasy, but one look at the calendar says September is right around the corner. Regardless of what those magazines tell me I’m just not prepared to inject autumn decor into my space when I’m still holding tight to my summer fun. In light of this, I’m craving neutrals and aged metallics everywhere I look. A linen pillow here, whitewashed planks there and a bit of gold (as per usual) to luxe it up a bit. Surely next month I’ll feel differently, but for now, let’s keep this summer vibe going a bit longer, okay?

Shop the Look: Tamara Mellon’s Sleek Manhattan Apartment…

We can’t think of anyone who radiates sex appeal quite like high-heeled fashion mogul Tamara Mellon. With all the controversy surrounding her sultry Manhattan apartment designed by Martyn Lawrence-Bullard, it seemed the perfect time to reflect upon what makes this space so intriguing. But first… can we have a moment to reflect upon the good old days when she & her million dollar designer were besties and this penthouse was her proud sexy high rise perch? It was an icon meets tastemaker moment we’ll not soon forget, but it seems these two would rather move past it and forget it ever happened. Lawsuits are such a nuisance, no?

Back to the glory days of this over the top space that suited her as well as a pair of sky high black patent stilettos… Is it your typical penthouse? Clearly not. It is very much a mix of Ms. Mellon’s rebellious edge and Martyn’s “designed with a wink” style. From a sultry leopard rug to a 70’s worthy white leather tufted sofa, this is a home designed to be a fanciful escape for this high-wattage fashion icon after hours. It says come hither. It declares you are dripping with confidence and not afraid to show it. It is clearly a space that suited her at the time they collaborated on the space.

Want to channel your own American Gigolo (Gigolette?) style? Here are a few key pieces to help you recreate the vibe…

Luxe Accommodations: Kid and Coe…

Travel with children is an entirely new experience. With one I felt limited. With two I feel determined. Nothing is going to stop my insatiable need to roam the earth. I will concede that it’s far easier to convince the Mr. to hope on a flight to a domestic location. Even better if said location is a high end rental property where we can truly unwind and settle into a vacation frame of mind. Enter: Kid and Coe, family vacation rentals with you and your brood in mind. Homes and locations are vetted for their tot-friendly nature and proximity to things you (and your mini-you’s) will love doing.

Fear not… you won’t find yourself in a home across town. These are incredible properties all over the globe. Think: Vienna, Laguna Beach (my personal favorite on the domestic front), the Greek Islands and beyond. This is VRBO and Airbnb for those of us with little ones in tow.

Do you know what this means? No. More. Excuses.

Icons: Ford’s Focus…

Last night I read an interesting interview with Tom Ford via esquire. He dishes on fatherhood, his loathing of short pants, the importance of maintaining tight abs and other tidbits. Here are a few of my choice quotes:

"The most important thing a man can do is exercise and maintain his weight. Because that’s the key to looking youthful.”

I liked that one because it applies to all humans. Exercise adds color to your face and delivers that natural glow better than any NARS product possibly could.

"I don’t shout. Shouting is wasted energy. It embarrasses people in front of other people.”

So much wisdom packed into this. He is absolutely right of course. Shouting, in my opinion, is a display of being out of control. It reflects terribly on the person doing the shouting, and visibly wounds the one on the receiving end. Don’t do it.

"If I were straight and I were trying to seduce a woman, I could do it just by standing up at the table when she came back from the bathroom. It works. Every time I do that, all the straight men are sitting at the table and their wives are kicking them.”

Wise observation, Mr. Ford. Wise observation. Chivalry is most certainly an appealing quality in a man.

It’s clear from this (and every) interview with the fashion icon that confidence is not something Mr. Ford lacks. In the interview he candidly admits to having little or no fashion industry expertise in his early career. I love a self-made star who is simply “born with it” and then works tirelessly to achieve the level of success Tom has. He’s an interesting fellow showing no signs of stopping or ceasing to evolve. At 53 (yesterday was his birthday) he’s as relevant today as he was during those revolutionary Gucci years.

Happy belated birthday, Tom. And keep those abs tight. We’re watching. And by all means, please keep making those amazing sunglasses. We love them.

Tot Decor: Little Girl Goes Glam…

One day she’s playing in the sand, the next she’s wowing you with her knowledge of ball gowns and all things royal. My oldest (at the ripe young age of 6, mind you) is well on her way to becoming a bona fide glamour girl. Cream and gold reign supreme as her favorite colors, but let’s not forget pink for all its incredible beauty. A soft, upholstered headboard with brass nails, ample pillows for added cushioning and a flat out fabulous dresser are great for now and great for later.

I’m not a fan of “kid” furniture and these choices will solidly confirm that preference. As in the rest of the home, invest in quality pieces that will stand the test of time and (hopefully) be to her liking as she grows. If not? They are lovely enough to make any guest bedroom a chic retreat for out of town visitors.

Musings: Upcycling Hits Its Stride…

Ever wondered where pretty (but unwanted) teacups go when they’ve been cast from the curio? One clever Etsy boutique owner has a stylish idea for upcylcing your sweet granny’s chipped cups. Why, bone china bangles, of course!

They’ve been sold in Anthropologie both here and abroad. No small feat. Another bright idea carried out and proven to be successful. Remember, lovely friends… don’t quit your daydream!

Current Obsession: Coins, the Currency of Chic…

Is it just me or is Dolce & Gabbana picking up where Gianni Versace left off? The collection du jour does not boast the now iconic grotesque Medusa faces from Versace circa 1996, nor does it adorn every millimeter of fabric with vivid yellow or cobalt blue. Instead, we are greeted with endless ways to wear antique coins. Bikini bottoms, pendant necklaces, statement earrings and a stunning black bodysuit all celebrate the golden circular shape. And as much as I try to resist the unabashed opulence of it… all I kind of love it.

D&G is not alone. Other brands have revived the classic coin bracelet and gigolo necklace, but the Italian brand led the charge with the coin as their central theme for summer. Maybe it’s their restraint or their tightly edited color palette, but somehow I can’t help but adore it.

God help us all. There must be a little old lady from Boca inside of me trying to escape… or gold necklace wearing a gigolo. ;)

Perspective: Fresh Look, Fresh Outlook…

Much like editing your closet and deciding to empty it and begin anew, I felt moved to completely change the look and feel of the site to align with the present state of “me.” The previous framework was built in 2006 and simply wasn’t keeping up with my wishes. You know that feeling when something familiar just isn’t right? Yes… that feeling. Acting on those realizations is key, and I’m certainly one who doesn’t ignore those clear internal signals.

Those of you who love looking back: It will take me some time to migrate all of my old posts over here (seven years of juicy Life in a Venti Cup content), so please be patient for the entirety of the archives to arrive. They are coming!

But most of all, I’m focused on enjoying the fresh new site and thanking you for being loyal (or perhaps brand new) readers. Rather than the previous format of mostly linear posts running down the page (so boring, right?), you can now browse by tags (posts like this fall under the distinction of perspective) or category (try inspiration for your morning dose of optimistic goodness).

Be sure to check out the fun top navigation and explore the different areas of content. Yes, there will be crossover, after all a girl can’t help but feather her nest and add to her closet at the same time. And brace yourselves for a series of fun interviews with designers, style icons, entrepreneurs and other incredible people who make life and living so much more interesting.

If you’re an RSS feed subscriber, rest assured I’ve kept the same feed. New? Grab yourself some style served up fresh daily. Let’s move together into our chic new future. It’s so much prettier here!

xoxo

Luxe Accommodations: Sir Richard Rocks the Kasbah…

Normally a resort that looks this isolated - no matter how luxe - and is no where near an ocean is not my cup of tea. However… Kasbah Tamadot is intriguing to say the least. Part of a very elite collection of Virgin Limited Edition resorts, this one offers a truly unique North African experience.

Imagine a hot air balloon ride over Marrakesh, a dip in your own private pool, 4x4’ing over the hilly terrain or being absolutely spoiled at the spa. In true Richard Branson form, this exclusive resort almost begs you to bring along your wild and crazy entourage for what is guaranteed to be a once in a lifetime experience. Party on, Marrakesh. Party on!

Dreamy Spaces: Whitewashed Wonders…

It’s not that I don’t love color. I certainly do. I love pink lip gloss, colorful blouses and vibrant bouquets. But when it comes to living and enjoying my home I bask in the glow of rooms that lack loud colors. The lighter and brighter the spaces, the better.  My next home? An even more limited palette with white and whitewashed finishes dominating the scene. Images like these make me crave a blank slate. How about you? Do you thrive in serenity at home or are you fulfilled by lively colors all around you?
